The Methodist Church founded the Pennington School in 1838 on 54 acres, only 8 miles from Princeton University in New Jersey. Serving grades 6 through 12, Pennington provides services for students with learning disabilities and prepares students for success at the college level. Stephen Crane, noted author of works such as The Red Badge of Courage, was a student at Pennington and his father served as headmaster in the mid-1800s.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Start your visit to the Pennington School at the Admissions Office, located in the Lowellden House. This two-story building started as the headmaster's house and was named after the poet James Russell Lowell, a anti-slavery reformer and professor at Harvard.
Step2
Run over to the Sparks Gymnasium for a pick-up game of basketball in one of the two courts or for a dip in the pool. Pennington has numerous varsity athletic programs for students. The facilities also support the middle school athletic program.
Step3
Grab your picnic basket and meander across O'Hanlon Lawn, an area where students can relax in the sunshine on warm days. Located in the center of the campus, this area once contained O'Hanlon Hall and the Shaw Memorial Chapel but the grassy area is all that remains after a fire in 1980.
Step4
Stop by for a lesson at Old Main, the oldest building on campus. The upper floors serve as residence halls, but the lower area contains both offices and classrooms.
Step5
Catch a performance at the Campus Center. The Center for the Arts contains areas for all of the arts, visual and performance. The McLarty Blackbox Theater hosts multiple productions throughout the year, including a musical in the winter. After a performance students can relax at the Student Center.
Step6
Be extra quiet when you enter the Meckler Library as students may be studying for exams. Within you'll find not only the normal selection of books, but also two computer labs and an electronic classroom.
Step7
Leave your laundry at home when you visit the dormitories at Pennington School. Becher Hall and Old Main have laundry facilities, but the Buck Hall residents have to carry their loads over to Old Main. The dorms all have resident faculty available to help if you have any questions.

Tips & Warnings

  • A summer reading list is available for incoming students.
  • The acceptance rate is fairly low, around 29 percent.
