Things You'll Need:
- Plumber's putty
- Adjustable wrenches
- Screwdriver
- Sponge
- Towels
- Rustproof washers
- Water pump pliers
-
Step 1
Turn off the water supply.
-
Step 2
Flush to empty the tank and bowl. Soak up any extra water using a sponge or towel.
-
Step 3
Unthread the nut between the tank and water supply.
-
Step 4
Remove the tank.
-
Step 5
Pry off the trim caps at the base of the bowl, and unscrew the nuts.
-
Step 6
Rock the bowl to loosen the seal. Once loosened, remove bowl.
-
Step 7
Cram a towel in the toilet flange opening to keep sewer gases from entering the home.
-
Step 8
Remove the old wax seal and clean the floor.
-
Step 1
Place the toilet temporarily on the floor over the flange. If it's not level, use non-rusting metal washers as shims.
-
Step 2
Install new pair of hold-down bolts.
-
Step 3
Place a wax ring gasket over the bowl's outlet horn.
-
Step 4
Put plumber's putty between the toilet and the floor.
-
Step 5
Remove the towel from toilet flange opening.
-
Step 6
Hold the bowl upright a few inches above the floor where the outlet horn is just above the toilet flange, and then gently lower it so the bolts pass through the openings on the bowl base.
-
Step 7
Rock the bowl front-to-back and side-to-side while pushing down. Slightly rotate it to force out the excess wax.
-
Step 8
Make sure the bowl is level with the wall.
-
Step 9
Place the washers over the hold-down bolts, and tighten the nuts finger-tight.
-
Step 1
Put the rubber washer into the flush valve opening in the bottom of the tank.
-
Step 2
Lift the tank, and lower it onto the back of bowl.
-
Step 3
Install the two tank-mount bolts from inside the tank, and add two rubber washers against the tank and the bowl.
-
Step 4
Connect the water supply to the inlet valve, and turn on the water. Check for leaks while the tank fills.
