How to Play Strategy in Rugby

Rugby is a game of speed, strength and strategy. Like football or even chess, it requires strategic thinking on the part of players and coaches. Read this article to learn the basics of developing a team strategy.

Instructions

    • 1

Know the strengths and weaknesses of the opposing team. The old adage "know your enemy" is true in rugby and in life. The best strategic plan takes into account the opposing team and the way they play the game.

    • 2

Be aware of your own team's strengths and weaknesses. Decide strategies based on the best qualities of your players. Choose the best players to carry out the plan and allow the other players to play supporting roles.

    • 3

Modify your strategy when necessary. A good strategic plan takes factors that can't be controlled--like the weather and ground conditions--into consideration. At different points during the game, the amount of time left to play and whether or not a score is needed will also affect strategy.

    • 4

Create and use time and space. If you are a coach, teach your players to create enough space on the field, recognize useful space and use this space to best advantage.

    • 5

Revise your strategy as needed. It's good to review your strategy after every game. Determining what worked and what didn't gives you a framework for constantly improving your game.
