Vert skateboarding is one of the most exciting extreme sports out there, but it comes with so much terminology that may seem like the more experienced skateboarders are speaking a foreign language. Learning vert "language" is a great first step towards learning how to skate vert.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn the vert terms for skateboard stances. You can either skate regular foot or goofy foot. Regular foot is when you skate with your left foot towards the front (or nose) of the board. Goofy foot is when you skate with your right foot towards the front of the board.

  2. Step 2

Gather information on different types of Grind tricks. A grind is when you ride on the coping of a ramp or the edge of a pool on the trucks of your skateboard.

  3. Step 3

Find out more about Air-tricks. An air-trick can be a flip, grab or spin that is executed when your board leaves the surface of the ramp.

  4. Step 4

Study the different types of Slide tricks. A slide is when you ride on the coping of a ramp or the edge of a pool on the deck (or wood) of your skateboard.

  5. Step 5

Gather information on other vert terms. Some other important terms include bails, carving and switch. Bailing is when realize you can't pull the trick and jump off your board. Carving is when you lean and turn sharply on your board. Switch is when you pull a trick in the opposite stance from how you normally ride.

  6. Step 6

Immerse yourself in the culture. Take part in online vert chat rooms, hang out in skate shops and visit local skate parks. Go to every skate demo you can find. You can pick up vert terms and skateboard lingo very quickly this way.
