Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Book your trip early to avoid crowds. Realize that hotels in Antigua, Chichicastenago and Panajachel fill up months before the busiest time in Guatemala. Most travelers visit the country around Holy Week, between Palm Sunday and Easter.
Step2
Spend a night at Takal to enjoy the experience of the Mayan ruins. Stay at a hotel within the park. Get up very early in the morning, before the crowds, and go toward the plaza with your guide. Go to the top of one of the easy-to-climb mountains. Get the guide to show you the variety of park wildlife that can only be seen early in the morning.
Step3
Shop at one of the outdoor markets; there is one in every major town. Visit the Chichicastenago market, a favorite of local and international visitors. Sunday is the busiest day at the market.
Step4
Make transportation arrangements. Though shuttles are reliable, they are more expensive than alternative transportation. Make an advance reservation at travel agencies and the airport. Reservations are also available at most hotels.
Step5
Be careful with the water. Select only bottled water and avoid iced beverages while in the country.
