Tourist-friendly Thailand attracts millions of visitors yearly who enjoy the natural attractions such as the mountains and beaches. Thailand offers an abundance of on-land and water-related outdoor activities to entice travelers. This deeply-religious Asian country remembers the past by including sites that pay homage to important periods in Thai history. Follow these easy steps to enjoy travel to Thailand.

From Quick Guide: Asian Adventure
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Put the chopsticks down. Thais use forks and spoons except when they're eating Chinese meals.

  2. Step 2

Start with the Thai staples at mealtime, if you are unsure of what to order. Order tom yam king, which is lemongrass soup and pawn with mushrooms. Then advance to pad Thai, also known as fried noodles with tofu, eggs, vegetables and peanuts.

  3. Step 3

Order your dishes "mai phet," not spicy. Know what to expect because the food can get very spicy. Expect spicy food if "phet."

  4. Step 4

Skip the fish sauce called "nam pla" if you are on a low-sodium diet. Nam pla is a commonly used salt substitute.

  5. Step 5

Pay attention while driving. Remember that traffic laws are commonly ignored. Drivers clear the road for larger vehicles. Bicyclists often fail to look around them. Motorcyclists drive as if they are impervious of danger.

  6. Step 6

Women should wear a scarf in the temple and dress modestly. Women who are dressed inappropriately may not be allowed to enter the temple.

  7. Step 7

Take off your shoes before going into the temple.

  8. Step 8

Carry a small package of tissues or toilet paper. Older buildings and rural areas where you might find squat toilets rarely provide toilet paper. A bucket is often placed under a tap next to the toilet. The common practice is to fill the bucket with water and pour the water into the toilet to flush it manually. Western-style toilets are normally available in the main tourist areas. They are common in hotels.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid driving at night in rural areas where robberies have been reported, especially in the south beyond Surat Thani and in the north and south of Chiang Mai.
  • Avoid actions that could offend others. Displays of confrontations, anger and raised voices are considered to be very bad behavior. Thais also dislike public displays of affection. Wearing revealing outfits or going shirtless other than at the pool or beach also gets a frown.
  • Do not wear tank tops or shorts. Some temples will provide wraps to borrow if you are inappropriately dressed. It is best to bring your own wrap.
  • Do not point your toes at an image of Buddha; Thai people consider that sacrilegious.
  • Do not step over someone's legs or a seated person. Do not point your feet toward anyone. Keep your feet on the floor and avoid showing the soles of your feet. For similar reasons, do not touch anyone's head, even a child's. The head is considered to be holy.
