How to Become a PGA Tour Rules Expert
Images of purple-faced football and basketball coaches screaming at officials often grace our television sets. Not so with golf. As a matter of fact, tournaments have been lost because golfers have called rules violations on themselves for inadvertently moving a ball an imperceptible millimeter. Golfers may also call upon a rules official to render a Solomon-like judgment when faced with a dilema. Find out here how to become one of these rules gurus.

1
Study the rules of golf and attend a rules seminar offered by the United States State Golf Association (USGA). The USGA is an amateur organization, but it is responsible for establishing the rules of golf. For the most part, The Professional Golfer's Association Tour (PGAT) adheres to the USGA rules.
-
2
Begin with the 2 day introductory session. Then take one of the standard 4 day sessions. The list of sessions is on the USGA website.
-
-
3
Begin networking while attending the rules seminars.
-
4
Volunteer for work on the regional level of the USGA. The USGA divides the nation into 9 regions. Regional offices are also listed on the USGA website.
-
5
Let the golf pro at your club know you are interested in becoming a rules expert. Your local pro is a member of the Professional Golfers of America (PGA). This is a different organization than the PGAT. Unless you have contacts with a member of the PGAT, it is a good place to begin networking.
-
6
Continue attending the rules seminars and taking the rules tests. As your proficiency on the tests increases, you will be establishing the credibility needed for a job with the PGAT.
-
7
When you feel you have established credibility and a record of work at local and regional tournaments, contact the PGAT and submit an application for a job as a rules expert. Be persistent and always continue networking.
