How to Do a Front Flip on a Snowmobile

Sure, the pros make it look easy, but a front flip is a difficult snowmobile trick that requires you to complete a forward-oriented 360-degree head-over-heels flip in the air. To perform one, you'll need the right snowmobile and plenty of patience. Read on to learn how.

Instructions

  1. Practice a Snowmobile Front Flip

    • 1

Equip yourself properly. If you don't already own a snowmobile suited to performing tricks (called an "extreme snowmobile"), consider investing in one. Extreme snowmobiles are lighter in weight and have a more aerodynamic design than regular machines.

    • 2

Hook up with other extreme snowmobiling enthusiasts. Learning together and succeeding together is more rewarding, and you will also be able to benefit from the successes (and failures) of others. With any luck, you'll be able to find someone who's already conquered the front flip and can teach you how.

    • 3

Get used to the way your snowmobile feels while airborne. The best way to do this is to simply perform regular jumps off a snowmobile ramp. If you're brand-new to sport snowmobiling, even this simple act will take considerable practice. Landing even a straight jump is a complex balancing act that requires you to understand the physics of snowmobiling.

    • 4

Try a front flip when you've mastered normal jumping. It's trickier than a back flip because your machine is more naturally inclined to rotate backwards than forwards when you come off a ramp at an angle. In order to execute the forward-oriented 360-degree front flip, you'll need a proper head of steam when you hit the ramp. Take your feet off the snowmobile to lighten the load it's carrying, and use your body to lean forward and create enough momentum to send your snowmobile into a front flip. Follow through and land smoothly by orienting your machine parallel to the ground.

    • 5

Let go of your snowmobile, and let it land on its own if you know you're not going to succeed in landing the jump. The last thing you want is for your snowmobile to land on top of you.

    • 6

Remember that it's easier said than done to do a front flip on a snowmobile. Keep practicing and don't get discouraged.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check out videos of properly-executed (and badly executed) front flips. The best way to ready yourself to perform the trick is to learn from others.

  • Extreme snowmobiling is dangerous. Never attempt a trick that exceeds your skill level.

  • Have someone else with you at all times when you're trying to practice your snowmobile tricks. You don't want to be stranded in winter if you get hurt.

  • Trying tricks on conventional snowmobiles is very dangerous. Don't do it.
