Instructions

Choose the Right Gloves for Your Snowmobiling Needs

  1. Step 1

Locate a store whose only business is snowmobiles and/or accessories and clothing for snowmobilers. The range of products available will be superior. Or, browse online to buy direct from the makers. Prominent industry leaders in the manufacture of snowmobile gloves include HJC, CKX, Coldwave, Sledmate, Ski-Doo and Klim.

  2. Step 2

Go with lightweight, simple nylon gloves if you're a new or leisure rider. They're relatively inexpensive and will do the job so long as you don't go out riding in extreme conditions or at high speeds. At minimum, you should make sure that the gloves you buy are waterproof and come with special palm grips and added padding and insulation when compared to regular-wear winter gloves.

  3. Step 3

Pick gloves that offer a better grip and more protection if you're more serious about your snowmobiling. Among the features you can expect from top-of-the-line snowmobile gloves are waterproofing inserts, lightweight insulation, precision adjustability and reflective accessories. It also never hurts to be safe rather than sorry and spend a little extra money on gloves that offer impact protection made from durable material.

  4. Step 4

Buy gloves with firmer hand protection if you ride competitively or if you're into racing your snowmobile. Gloves designed for racers should include a hand shield made of silicon or a similar lightweight but solid protective material. These gloves also have precision grip capabilities and goggle wipers for times when the guy in front of you sends a bunch of snow blowing back in your eyes.

  5. Step 5

Try several pairs of gloves on and make sure all their features are explained to you by sales staff at the store you're shopping at.

  6. Step 6

Test the gloves by squeezing your fists as though you're gripping snowmobile handles, and also see how easily you're able to make precision movements with your fingers. It can be difficult to find snowmobile gloves that offer the protection you need with a comfortable fit. Do some digging before you buy.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are gloves designed for riders of all skill levels. Novices and weekend adventurers don't really need the expensive protection offered by top-of-the-line racing gloves.
  • Accessories that can quickly and safely dry snowmobile gloves are also available on the market.
