Learn to Do a Butter on a Snowboard
-
1
Go to a flat and well-groomed section of the trail. Ice and choppy conditions can make a butter very hard to do.
-
2
Put extra weight on your front foot. You may also want to rotate your torso towards the tail of the board to help you spin the board quickly.
-
-
3
Lean forwards a little to lift up the tail end of your snowboard. Don't lift it too high because you'll lose your balance. Once the tail is in the air, rotate your torso towards the front of the board.
-
4
Set the tail of the board down once it rotates 180 degrees. You should now be riding fakie.
-
5
Apply pressure on your rear foot and lean toe-side a little. This motion should slow you down and naturally rotate the board another 180 degrees. However, this time the rotation is on your heel side.
-
6
Stop the natural rotation once you've returned to your normal stance. The key to making a butter look good is to do the second rotation right after the first finishes. The butter is a neat trick because the 180 turns are in different directions.

Tips & Warnings
If you're having trouble with the first turn, try just balancing on the nose of your board and think of it as a reverse wheelie.
Just doing the first turn in a butter can be a stylish way to move into a fakie-riding stance.
Once you have the basic butter mastered, try switching the direction of each rotation.
Make sure that no one is around you when you do a butter. You're rotating your snowboard and can easily hit people that are on your sides and closer than 5 feet
Don't try to do a butter at high speed. You can lose your balance in the first turn or catch an edge in the second one if you're going too fast. You don't need to be going very fast to do a butter.
