How to Buy Ski Travel Bags

Most of us don't live next to the slopes, so traveling to our winter sport destination is required. If you need to drive or fly to get to the mountain of your dreams, then you are going to need a bag to get your ski stuff there safely.

Instructions

  1. Buy the Right Ski Bag for the Job

    • 1

Figure out how you will be getting to your ski destination. If you will be traveling more often by car, you may be able to save some money and purchase a bag with less padding, while traveling by plane will require a bag that gives more protection to your skis and other equipment.

    • 2

Look for a high thread count and tightly woven fabric when considering your new bag purchase. By keeping your eye on the quality of the materials, you'll find a more durable and safe ski bag for your travels.

    • 3

Buy a bag with a coil zipper. Typically zippers with teeth tend to snag on cloth and other items you may have packed in the bag, causing them to break. Since you'll want to supplement the padding of your bag with you ski clothes and other soft articles, a strong zipper is a definite must.

    • 4

Decide whether you want a bag with padding or not. Obviously, with more padding your skis will have more protection, making it the preferred option when you buy a bag for air travel. However, many padded ski bags won't fit in a standard luggage or ski rack on your car.

    • 5

Keep a grip on your bag by choosing one with webbing (or a strap) which is wide and tightly woven. The width will keep it from biting into your hands as you haul it through the airport or hotel, and the weave will ensure a longer-lasting strap.

    • 6

Travel easily with a ski bag with wheels. You might have to pay more for a bag equipped with wheels, but your shoulders will thank you. Look for strong sturdy wheels made with thick composite material and avoid those that look loose or poorly put together.

    • 7

Make your travel to the slopes easier by carrying fewer bags. If you pick a ski bag big enough, you may be able to fit as much as a week's worth of gear inside.

Tips & Warnings

  • You'll notice a variety of prices charged for ski bags currently on the market. These differences in prices are generally indicate the variety of materials, amount of padding and the quality of the construction of the bag.
