The key to a fun day on the slopes is to dress appropriately. You need to know what kind of ski clothing to shop for and buy before you hit the snow. At the essence of your ski clothing shopping trip should be one word--layers!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Warm underwear
  • Gloves
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Ski boots
  • Hat
  • Waterproof pants
  • Sunglasses

Invest in Layers of Ski Clothing

  1. Step 1

Start by shopping for your base layer of clothing. Depending on where you plan on skiing, you may need to buy long thermal leggings and undershirt. Another warm option is long silk underwear.

  2. Step 2

Check the racks for ski pants. This will be the next layer you'll put on. These should be insulated enough to be warm outside, but comfortable enough to transition to the lodge when you decide to head indoors. Look for water-proof and wind-proof pants.

  3. Step 3

Buy a warm fleece to wear under your ski jacket. A good option is one with a zipper neck that extends into a mock-turtleneck style. If conditions get too chilly you will be able to insulate your neck against the cold breeze.

  4. Step 4

Look for a ski a jacket that is also water-proof and wind-proof. Other features to look for when you buy a jacket are zipper pockets for secure storage and glove or mitten hooks.

  5. Step 5

Find ski gloves or mittens to keep your hands warm. The best designs feature an elasticized wrist and construction with a water-proof outer layer and soft, insulating inner layer.

  6. Step 6

Buy only those ski boots which suit your ski bindings and feel comfortable. Remember you will be on your feet for most of your day on the slopes, so shop for boots as you would for any kind of shoe, looking for a comfortable and secure fit.

  7. Step 7

Check out the high technology used in ski sunglasses and goggles. Though you may not want to invest in an ultra-hip pair of shades for your ski resort vacation, it is worthwhile to bring along a pair of glasses to protect your eyes from the glare of the sun off the snow.

  8. Step 8

Keep your head warm by buying a stocking cap or other winter hat. The fit should be tight but not constrictive.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check the fit of your ski clothes each season. Your attire should fit comfortably and close to your body without hindering your movement. Pay particularly close attention to the shoulder width of your ski jacket--you should be able to easily lift both arms while the jacket is zipped up.
