Step 1
Look for a lightweight pole if you are a beginner cross-country skier. Graphite is an excellent material to look for in lightweight but strong ski poles.
-
Step 2
Check the basket or the ring around the base of the ski pole. If you will be cross-country skiing through deep snow, you will need a ski pole with a larger basket. Since the basket keeps the pole from sinking too deeply into the snow, you don't need a large basket for ski through more shallow snow.
-
Step 3
Test the height of your ski poles by placing them under your armpits. They should fit comfortably and perhaps even be a little bit longer than the distance from your armpit to the floor.
-
Step 1
Check the height of any poles you might buy for downhill skiing. Stand up straight, holding the ski pole upside down with your hand under the basket. With the handle of the pole on the floor, your forearm should be parallel to the floor.
-
Step 2
Look at the different kinds of grips offered in ski poles. Depending on your ability and taste you may prefer a loop or a strap grip.
-
Step 3
Remember to consider basket size. Just in Nordic skiing, the basket helps keep your poles from sinking too deep--a bigger basket is better for powder conditions.
-
Step 4
Ask for a custom fitting if you have moguls on your mind. A ski professional should be able to help you find the best pole for your build and skill level.
