Mardi Gras comes only once a year, but you can throw a Mardi Gras party any time. All you need is authentic New Orleans music, Creole food and the right party supplies to recreate the wild abandon of the Big Easy. If you're throwing a Mardi Gras party, the only rule you should really stick to is the color scheme of green, gold and purple. According to tradition, green represents faith, gold represents power and purple represents justice.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Get the Right Mardi Gras Party Supplies

  1. Step 1

Select a theme for your Mardi Gras party. Be sure to include the theme in your invitation, so that people can dress accordingly.

  2. Step 2

Rent cocktail serving glasses or buy plastic hurricane glasses from your local party store.

  3. Step 3

Pick up costumes for the king and queen of the party. Be sure to purchase a crown and tiara too to complete the look.

  4. Step 4

Pick up feather boas and drape them from the ceiling or hand them out to guests as they arrive.

  5. Step 5

Buy Mardi Gras beads and place them throughout the party area. Select beads in several different sizes and lengths to create the illusion that you picked them up right off Bourbon Street.

  6. Step 6

Select green, gold and purple gift bags and hand them out to party guests for taking home trinkets and prizes.

  7. Step 7

Purchase traditional Mardi Gras supplies like aluminum doubloons or chocolate coins.

  8. Step 8

Pick up traditional Zydeco music and play it loud. Look for compilation CDs like "Zydeco's Greatest Hits" from Amazon.com (see Resources below).

  9. Step 9

Make a King Cake or order one from the local bakery. Pick up a plastic baby at a local craft store if you're making a homemade cake.

  10. Step 10

Consider hiring entertainment, such as magicians, a court jester or a jazz band if your budget allows for such an expense.

Tips & Warnings
  • Call up your friends and have a Mardi Gras craft night. Use this time to decorate masks and party invitations, try out drink recipes and pick a king and queen for the party.
  • Buy or make extra masks for those guests who arrive without them.
  • Be sure to mention "adults only" on the invitations if you don't have any activities planned for children.
