Make a Mask for Mardi Gras
Step1
Pick the material for your mask. Keep in mind that cardboard is the most user-friendly and durable material for first-time mask makers. Choose paper for papier mâché projects, or try advanced techniques using plastic, leather and metal materials if you have the tools for cutting and shaping.
Step2
Create a mask outline using a piece of tracing paper and a pencil or refer to a beginner mask-making book for templates.
Step3
Cut out the mask outline using sharp scissors or a box cutter. Use extra precision around the eye area for sharp lines and added visibility.
Step4
Make a small hole on either side of the mask for attaching string, elastic thread, ribbon or wire.
Step5
Paint cardboard and paper masks with a base coat. Select traditional Mardi Gras colors, like purple, green and gold. Apply gold and silver glitter paint for a shiny base coat.
Step6
Allow craft paint to dry for at least 10 minutes. Add a second coat of paint for deeper hues.
Step7
Tie yarn, string or ribbon to the mask and adjust it for a snug fit.
How to Decorate Mardi Gras Masks
Step1
Take a moment to map out an overall design scheme for your mask. Be sure to check for symmetry and balance. Any time you add decorations to one side, it's a good idea to add the same amount to the other side of the mask.
Step2
Buy low-cost sequins at your local craft store and glue them directly onto the mask. Be sure to pick up some invisible craft glue for the best results.
Step3
Add glass or plastic beads to the eye area for added sparkle.
Step4
Decorate the mask with feathers. Cover the entire mask with short faux feathers or adorn the top and sides with long feathers.
Step5
Add delicate dried flowers to the mask for a feminine touch.
Step6
Use glitter glue to draw a rim around the eyes or the perimeter of the mask.
