Mardi Gras masks were first worn by secret social societies in New Orleans to hide the identity of members during parades and balls. Masks were later worn by common folks in the streets of New Orleans as a type of rebellion against the upper classes. Today, tourists flock to the "Big Easy" to escape from their everyday lives and get lost in the two-week excitement of Mardi Gras. If you want to get in the spirit of the scene, dress up in lavish costumes and pick a feathered mask to hide your identity.

Pick a Feather Mask for Mardi Gras

  1. Step 1

Pick a costume and find a feather mask to match. Keep in mind that the more you get into the wild and crazy scene, the more you're likely to feel like a local. Look for politically themed costumes, jester gear and outfits depicting Greek, Roman and Egyptian gods and mythological creatures.

  2. Step 2

Pick up a local guidebook to New Orleans and hit the French Quarter for authentic New Orleans Mardi Gras masks. Hit such popular shops as Moma's Mask Shop on Peter Street, Maskarade on Saint Ann Street or Maskarade Fantasy on Bourbon Street for fancy, grotesque and one-of-a-kind feather masks.

  3. Step 3

Play it safe and pick up a low-cost feather mask featuring official Mardi Gras shades of green, purple and gold. Keep in mind that these official Mardi Gras colors will match just about any parade theme.

  4. Step 4

Look for a brightly colored wig or feathered headdress to match your mask. Make sure the headdress is lightweight enough for your neck to support for several hours at a time.

  5. Step 5

Try on several different feather masks before you buy. Check your mask for comfort, especially around the eye and mouth areas. Be sure the eye-holes are large enough for adequate visibility. If purchasing a face mask, make sure the mouth hole is large enough for sipping water and other beverages.

  6. Step 6

Check out NOLA.com for updates on parade routes and schedules, a history of every active krewe and parade themes (see Resources below). Pick up masks and costumes that match the theme of your favorite krewes.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can pick up low-cost, used costumes and masks at many costume shops starting on Ash Wednesday.
  • Don't let the partying get out of hand. Get arrested during Mardi Gras and you're looking at a fine of at least $200.
