Step 1
Take off all your jewelry before going to the parade. Rings, bracelets and watches can get in the way when trying to catch beads. Also, keep in mind that most beads are plastic, and they can easily get tangled on your jewelry and break off.
-
Step 2
Use your foot to lay claim on beads. When somebody from a Mardi Gras float throws beads your way, step on them first, and then bend down to get them. Using your hands, instead of your foot, will more than likely result in somebody stepping on your fingers.
-
Step 3
Find higher ground. Sit on a friend's shoulders, step on a ladder or make use of any blocks or fences you see. Being above other people will give you an advantage when the beads are thrown from above (balconies) or from the floats.
-
Step 4
Stay behind. Float riders will sometimes throw beads towards the back of the barricades where less people are standing. If you're there, you have more chances of catching beads than if you're standing shoulder to shoulder with other people against the barricades.
-
Step 5
Stress persistence when asking for beads. When float riders pass by, yell for beads. Ask for beads from the people standing above you on balconies and from other spectators who pass you by. The more you ask, the better your chances of getting them.
