The Mardi Gras parades on Fat Tuesday are magical events. The culmination of 2 weeks of festivities and the final parades are times to remember. Most Mardi Gras visitors are happy to simply watch from the sidelines, but if you would prefer to join in, there are a few things you can do to get a place on a parade float.

    Join a Mardi Gras Parade

  1. Step 1

Wear a costume. The more outrageous it is, the better. Some floats take on spectators who are wearing unique, extreme and loud costumes. Make sure people notice you.

  2. Step 2

Look for contests sponsored by local businesses or the city. Many contests offer the chance to join a Mardi Gras float as a prize. Ask your hotel about any contests held in the area or look on bulletin boards for announcements.

  3. Step 3

Arrive well in advance. If a float announces that it plans to welcome riders starting at 10 a.m., arrive at 9:30 a.m. Many floats operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and you may have to compete with hundreds of other hopeful riders for a place on a float.

  4. Step 4

Find out whether you need to sign up for the parade a day in advance. Some floats require it. Others will ask for an entry fee or require a costume if you want to join in the fun.

  5. Step 5

Sign up online to join the parade. If you're going to be in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, you can get a guaranteed spot on a float by signing up online at MardiGrasDigest.com (see Resources below). Once you fill out the online form, a group will contact you directly with details on how to join the parade.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your destination in mind when you're making plans to join a Mardi Gras parade. Some cities are more popular than others, and you may have to sign up well in advance if you want to have a chance to be selected.
  • Some hotels and businesses sponsor their own parades and allow their guests or patrons to be part of them. Ask around to find such opportunities.
  • Look for themed floats rather than general versions. They may be easier to join.
