Step 1
Decide when you want to host your party. Mardi Gras celebrations can take place anytime in January, although Fat Tuesday, the week before Ash Wednesday, is the most popular day for parties.
-
Step 2
Decide on a guest list and determine whether you want to invite children. If you want the party to include alcohol and late-night entertainment, an over-21-only affair may be best.
-
Step 3
Design themed invitations. Buy feathered masks and write the party details on the back. Insert each mask into an envelope. Ask your guests to wear the masks when they come to the party.
-
Step 4
Plan a menu that includes traditional Cajun recipes, such as Andouille BBQ and jambalaya. Mix traditional recipes with party snacks.
-
Step 5
Choose large items, such as balloons and banners to liven up the area where you plan to host the party. Select matching serving pieces for a put-together look. Make sure your items keep with the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold.
-
Step 6
Ask your guests to arrive in costume. Offer prizes for the most outrageous outfits. Give guests the option of simply wearing masks if they don't want to don full costumes.
-
Step 7
Have a color-themed party. Allow your guests to wear anything they want as long as they stick to the traditional Mardi Gras colors: purple, green and gold.
-
Step 8
Mail your invitations early. Many individuals choose to mail invitations about 3 to 4 weeks before their parties. Alternatively, you may choose to send your invitations via email.
