The choice to become a U.S. Army Chaplain is a decision to make a commitment to serve God and the country when in peace or at war. The Chaplain is the spiritual leader, committed to endure the hardships alongside those in combat. He is also a vital connection with their family members on the home-front. Army Chaplains fulfill many of the same duties as a pastor, such as being a counselor, visiting the sick, conducting funerals and many more roles. There is always a need for part-time and full-time positions.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Qualify to Become a U.S. Army Chaplain

Step1
Understand you must be recognized by an ecclesiastical entity. Many religious organizations participate in the chaplaincy program. Contact the officials of your religious organization to determine if they are recognized by the Army Chaplain Corps.
Step2
Meet the educational requirements for chaplaincy. The minimum requirements in addition to a baccalaureate degree include a master's degree in divinity or a graduate degree in theological studies. At least 72 graduate semester hours are required.
Step3
Realize there is an age requirement for chaplains in the Army. The minimum age is 21 years old with a maximum age of 42 at the time of beginning service with the Army. If there is a shortage of representation for specific faith groups, there is a possibility of an exception to the age requirement.
Step4
Get at least 2 years of professional experience before you apply. This endorsement must be verified by the applicant's religious leaders at the time of application.
Step5
Evaluate your skills to see if you meet the basic requirements. If so, talk to a Chaplain Recruiting Team. Locate an Army Recruiting Office near you on the goarmy.com website (see Resources below).
Step6
Prepare your file with the assistance of the Chaplain Recruiting Team for review by the Selection Board.
Step7
Pass the scrutiny of a National Agency Security Clearance and a physical examination. The Army does a thorough background check and health exam to determine fitness for duty.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take advantage of a housing allowance or live in free housing on base. This benefit is in addition to the exceptional pay offered to chaplains by the U.S. Army.
  • Seminary students are eligible to join the chaplaincy program as long as they are endorsed by their ecclesiastical affiliation.
  • To become a U.S. Army Chaplain, you must be a citizen of the United States.
