You must be a United States citizen in order to register to vote in any federal, state or local election. By following simple instructions, you can register to vote by mail and have a say in the creation of laws, rules and regulations that govern and protect our country and its citizens. Voter registration applications can be found at a local public library or your local voter registration office.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Fill Out the Application

Step1
Begin by reading the instructions on the application. Some applications are state specific concerning the requirements associated with registration and where to mail the completed application.
Step2
Fill in your last, first and middle name. Do not write nicknames or initials.
Step3
Write in your legal home address. You cannot utilize P.O. boxes or rural routes for the purposes of voter registration. If you live on a rural route, there should be additional information at the bottom of the application that explains how to register.
Step4
Put your mailing address on the form. If you have a separate mailing address and living address, the application provides for this and requires both addresses.
Step5
Enter your date of birth in the following order: month, day and year.
Step6
Offer your telephone number. This step is completely optional and is only used if you would like the voter registration officials to contact you if they have any questions concerning your application.
Step7
Give your identification number. Some states require only a driver's license number or state identification number. Others require a social security number. If you possess neither, leave blank and the state will contact you for further information and an explanation.
Step8
Choose a party. Some states require you to choose a political party to associate yourself with.
Step9
List your race or ethnicity. This is typically voluntary. You may check the box next to the race or ethnicity that best fits you.
Step10
Sign your name and date and then mail the form to the appropriate address. Most applications require a signature and date of signature at the end of the form.
