The U.S. military presence in Afghanistan has been controversial since Day One. While there are those who believe Afghanistan is a safe haven for terrorists and should therefore be patrolled by coalition forces, others do not see it this way. With increasing troop casualties in Afghanistan and little word from the government on why our military is still there, more people are looking for ways to get the government to withdraw.

Make Efforts to Get the Government to Withdraw from Afghanistan

Step1
Make sure your voice is heard by writing letters to your Congressional representatives. Congressional representatives do pay attention to the opinions of their constituents, particularly around election time.
Step2
Write a letter to the President expressing your opinion. As the commander-in-chief of the U.S. armed forces, the President has the power to deploy troops anywhere in the world. He also has the power to recall them. Let him know why you think the government should withdraw from Afghanistan.
Step3
Participate in public events designed to draw attention to the need to withdraw from Afghanistan. Protests, debates, public speeches and parades are all events that may draw government attention if enough people get involved.
Step4
Encourage your family and friends to become active in the cause. Provide them with information on troop casualties in Afghanistan and tell them why you think we should no longer be there. Then direct them to resources for letting the government know what they think.
Step5
Have an online presence. Writing a blog or maintaining a website devoted to American withdrawal from Afghanistan is an excellent way to draw attention to the issue. The more you publicize your online venture, the more likely it is that government leaders will take notice.

Tips & Warnings

  • The more people who read your blog or website, the more likely it is the government will make a move in favor of your opinions. You need to be able to prove just how many people are visiting your site though. Make sure you put a hit counter on it and have a place for people to leave comments, whether you have a blog or an informational web page.
  • If you are participating in a public event, keep everything as legal as possible. This means finding out your local ordinances regarding public assemblies. Get your paperwork in order, have the appropriate permits on hand and don't stray from your prescribed assembly area. The police will be watching and you don't want to give them any reason to arrest you or anyone else in your group.
