The need for alternative fuel options is becoming clearer all the time. With an increasing dependence on Middle Eastern oil and environmental concerns over the use of fossil fuels, we need alternative fuel sources more than ever. However, up until now, the government has been resistant to exploring options and making a change. It is time you learned how to petition the government for alternative fuel options.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Petition the Government for Alternative Fuel Options

Step1
Research alternative fuel options. Learn the pros and cons of each and the economic implications of implementing these options. You will be able to present a more compelling case to the government if you are well informed.
Step2
Join an environmental organization that is fighting for alternative fuel options to be made available. Become active in this group and participate in all of their events. The larger the organization, the more the government will pay attention to its activities.
Step3
Write to your Congressional representatives and tell them your opinions on the issue of alternative fuels. Make your letters as full of well-researched facts and figures as you can.
Step4
Arrange for in-person visits with your Congressional representatives. Call their offices and speak to staff assistants to arrange your meetings.
Step5
Participate in public events designed to draw attention to the need for alternative fuels. Events such as protests, demonstrations, environmental fairs and tabling venues are all effective means of drawing government attention to the issue of alternative fuels.
Step6
Start an actual petition. Set up a table in a public place and ask registered voters to sign your petition regarding alternative fuel sources. When you have a sufficient number of signatures, send the petition in to the Congressional representative of your choice.

Tips & Warnings

  • When making arrangements to visit with Congressional representatives in person, know that if you are going to be in Washington, D.C., you can do it there. Otherwise, you may have to wait until your representatives make a visit to your area.
  • Petitions usually require at least 20,000 signatures for it to be taken seriously by members of Congress. To play it safe, check your state guidelines to see how many signatures are needed for an issue to be placed on the ballot at election time. Then aim for at least that many signatures.
  • When participating in public events, such as demonstrations, make sure you and your group are following the letter of the law. Obey all local ordinances, get the proper permits and stay within your designated area. Above all, make sure you remain orderly and civil. Otherwise, you can be sure the police will get involved and you might be arrested.
