The American Independent Party is a third party primarily organized in California. The origins of the American Independent Party started with the 1968 campaign of George Wallace for President. You can join the American Independent Party as a resident of California or participate in its affiliation with the Constitution Party.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Sign Up With the American Independent Party

  1. Step 1

Help establish your state's chapter of the American Independent Party. The party is only reliably present in California, and other chapters have been absorbed by the Constitution Party over the last decade. Make sure you find people who are interested in a long term investment and hard work in establishing the American Independent Party in your state.

  2. Step 2

Pass out ballot access forms to volunteers and friends to help get the American Independent Party in front of every voter. These forms include a space for contact information and a signature by members of the general public interested in seeing the party on the ballot. While these forms are required by state election laws, they also help promote the party and encourage others to join.

  3. Step 3

Register to vote as a member of the American Independent Party. Once your state's chapter has been through an election cycle and gained some recognition, the party's name will be added as an option to voter registration forms. Your registration as a member of the party on voting rolls helps demonstrate the strength of the party in the state.

  4. Step 4

Push your public radio station to open their political discussions and debates to American Independent Party candidates. Public radio stations typically base their debate lineup on the top two or three candidates in current opinion polls. Use open calls and public events to push your party's candidate to the attention of public radio listeners.

  5. Step 5

Use your membership in local third parties to create a coalition behind the American Independent Party. There are parties that put up local candidates that advocate a single position like tax reform or city planning. You should use this method if you have a particularly strong candidate who needs the help of disparate groups in your area.

Tips & Warnings
  • Gauge the level of interest within your community for an American Independent Party branch. The party's presence is largely in California, and states where there is no party structure in place can be difficult to enter. You should post bulletins and speak with coworkers to determine their desire to see the American Independent Party in their backyard.
