Traditionally children play the dreidel game during the eight days of Hanukkah as a fun way to remember Jewish heritage. Dreidels made of marshmallow mimic the shape of this game's toy and offer a fun snack for children during the holiday season. They are sturdy enough to spin, as well, giving children of all ages an enjoyable and edible treat.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Toothpicks
  • Food coloring
  • Peanut butter or Nutella
  • Pretzel sticks
  • Large marshmallows
  • Licorice whips
  • Strawberries
  • Icing
  • Sprinkles
  • Hershey's chocolate kisses

    Make Marshmallow Dreidels

  1. Step 1

Choose the material you want to use for the top, or handle, of your dreidel. Thin pretzel sticks work best, but licorice whips also can be used.

  2. Step 2

Make a hole in the center of the marshmallow and poke the pretzel through, making sure that a little bit sticks through the other side. For a more savory dreidel, use a marshmallow covered in toasted coconut. Dipping the marshmallow in chocolate and letting it dry first also adds a little extra fun to this treat.

  3. Step 3

Unwrap a Hershey's Kiss and bore a small hole in the center of the flat side so it will fit the pretzel. Hershey's Hugs or other varieties can be used.

  4. Step 4

Fit the top of the dreidel to the kiss. If the pretzel doesn't stick in there by itself, add a thin layer of peanut butter or icing in between the two layers to help them adhere.

  5. Step 5

Decorate the marshmallow dreidel. Coating it in frosting and sprinkles or peanut butter and chocolate shavings are tasty ways to make the dreidel look festive.

  6. Step 6

Make your candy dreidel into a real dreidel. Turn the marshmallow so the flat sides are on the outside and paint on the proper letters on all four sides using frosting or food coloring. Let it dry.

  7. Step 7

Consider making small marshmallow dreidels for snacks using pretzel sticks, mini marshmallows and nonpareils or small Hershey's Kisses.

Tips & Warnings
  • Let the children spin the dreidels on a plate so they don't get dirty before they eat them.
  • If you want to make a healthier dreidel, construct one with strawberries and toothpicks instead of marshmallows.
  • Don't let the children spin the dreidels after decorating them with peanut butter or icing. The dreidels will not be weighted properly and will fall over. Have them spin the dreidels before they are decorated.
  • Avoid using toothpicks as the dreidel handle if the young children will be eating them.
