Apple became eco-friendly long before many other high-tech firms, and has made several interesting energy saving features on its Mac OS Panther 10.3. With proper settings customized to the way you actually work, you can minimize the power drain of your Mac, save the screen from burn-in and even schedule automated startup and shut down times.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Use Mac OS Panther Energy Saving Features

  1. Step 1

Open "Energy Saver" in the "System Presences" application, via the "Dock" or the "Apple" menu.

  2. Step 2

Proceed through the tabs one at a time, in order. You will make settings in "Sleep," "Schedule" and "Options."

  3. Step 3

Set your preferred amount of elapsed time, after which the computer will be placed in sleep mode. This ranges from a minute to 3 hours, or "Never" if that is your preference.

  4. Step 4

Choose your setting for when to independently put the display to sleep by checking the appropriate box ("Put the display to sleep") and setting the time. You can also check a box (at the bottom of the window) to have the system put the hard drive(s) to sleep "when possible."

  5. Step 5

Select the second tab at the top of the window, "Schedule," to set the times for automated startup and shut down. You have control over the days and the hours for these settings.

  6. Step 6

Select the "Options" tab at far right to set "Wake Up Options" and "Other Options." The former includes energy saving features which wake the Mac for incoming faxes and administrator access over Ethernet, as well as the option to have the "Power Button" put the Mac to sleep.

  7. Step 7

Exit the "Energy Saver" window and the "System Preferences" application at the same time by choosing "Quit" from the "File" menu. Closing the window with the red button window control will, indeed, close the window, but will leave "System Preferences" running, which you may or may not wish to do.

Tips & Warnings
  • To conserve more energy, you may consider buying not merely a surge protector, but an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) that will keep your Mac powered up after a power outage, long enough to save your work and shut down correctly. This is the best additional purchase you can make to maximize your energy awareness and protection.
  • If you use the incoming fax machine feature on your Mac OS Panther, you may wish to leave it running in sleep mode rather than scheduling shut down times with "Energy Saver."
  • Don't use a screen saver. Put your display to sleep instead.
