After "Desktop Printers" were dropped from the Mac OS X feature set, an avalanche of complaints forced Apple to restore the feature in Mac OS Panther (10.3). "Desktop Printers" bring back easy printer management, quick and effective printer control and the intuitive ease of use for which the Mac is duly famous.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Create a Desktop Printer in Mac OS Panther

  1. Step 1

Go to "Applications/Utilities" and launch "Printer Setup Utility." Alternatively, you can also click the "Set Up Printers" button that is displayed after double-clicking "Print & Fax" in "System Preferences."

  2. Step 2

Review the printer list that appears, and decide on the printer(s) for which you wish to create "Desktop Printer" icons.

  3. Step 3

Highlight the printer for which you are making a "Desktop Printer" icon.

  4. Step 4

Go to the "Printers" menu and select the last item, "Create Desktop Printer."

  5. Step 5

Review the resulting dialog box. The location for the "Desktop Printer" icon will default to the "Desktop," but you can navigate and save it most anywhere. The name for the "Desktop Printer" will similarly default to the current printer name, although that too can be changed to whatever you prefer.

  6. Step 6

Click "Save" to create the "Desktop Printer" for your Mac OS Panther computer.

  7. Step 7

Check the functionality of your "Desktop Printer" by printing a test page or two. Check to see if the job is listed correctly and runs smoothly. You should also see if you can cancel the job while it's printing without causing any mishaps. If the "Desktop Printer" was properly created, every option should be available and functionality should be complete.

  8. Step 8

Repeat these steps, fully and in order, for any other printers that need "Desktop Printer" icons.

  9. Step 9

Consult a well-regarded Mac experts site, such as MacFixit, should you encounter unforeseen difficulties or strange system behavior following your creation of Desktop Printer icons (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • You can create a "Desktop Printer" for any printer that shows up in your "Printer List."
  • Make sure both your printer and Mac are operating correctly before starting, and run "Disk Utility" and repair permissions on your startup drive as well.
  • Spare yourself the confusion and do not use fancy names for "Desktop Printers." Simply use its system name or an abbreviation of it.
  • If you want to make a "Desktop Printer" for a new printer that is not yet installed, perform the installation first (whether local or remote) and add the printer to your "Printer List" before beginning these steps.
