With Mac OS Panther, it is now easier than ever to share files and peripherals across all kinds of networks. Printer sharing has become particularly trouble free and easy to set up and is the way Mac OS Panther helps you make printers accessible to both Macs and PCs on your home or office network.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Enable Printer Sharing in Mac OS Panther

  1. Step 1

Open "System Preferences" by selecting it in the "Apple" menu or the "Dock," or by double-clicking its icon in the "Applications" folder.

  2. Step 2

Click on the "Sharing" icon in the "Internet & Network" section of the resulting "System Preferences" window (the third section from the top of the window).

  3. Step 3

Pause to review the various options in the resulting "Sharing" window. You need to be familiar with these terms and concepts before you can enable or disable printing in Mac OS Panther, so if you are not, check with Apple support page for printing (see Resources below).

  4. Step 4

Select the first of the three tabs, the one labeled "Services." Although there are other settings you may need to make in this area, for now you are only concerned with the procedures that will help you enable "Printer Sharing." Locate this item at the bottom of the "Services" list.

  5. Step 5

Click the box in front of "Printer Sharing" to start the service. You will note that some information to the right of the list window will update with your selection, and the associated button will change from "Start" to "Stop." (You can use the button or make the same changes by checking/unchecking the list-window entry for "Printer Sharing.")

  6. Step 6

Select the middle tab above the list window, labeled "Firewall."

  7. Step 7

Look at the resulting window for "Firewall" to ensure that the "Printer Sharing" box is checked, which is your confirmation that the item was activated by the previous step. This entry will reflect whatever setting you made in "Services," regardless of the status (on or off) of your "Firewall."

  8. Step 8

Exit "System Preferences" by selecting "Quit" from the "File" menu. This will close the "Sharing" window and terminate the "System Preferences" application in one step.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always ensure that your printers are operating correctly before making any changes in sharing or connectivity. You should have quality cables (for power and connecting to your computer) that are not kinked or frayed, and you should have the most current printer drivers installed per the manufacturer's recommendation.
  • Make sure your printers are turned on and correctly connected.
