Step 1
Start up "Safari" from the "Finder" by using its "Dock" icon or double-clicking its application icon in the "Applications" folder.
-
Step 2
Go to the second menu from the left, named "Safari," which is immediately to the right of the Apple menu, and click on it.
-
Step 3
Look down to the second section (third line item) and select "Preferences" to access the application's settings.
-
Step 4
Review the line of icons at the top of the resulting window and click on "General," the first tab (icon) at the left.
-
Step 5
Look in the "General" window. Although there are numerous settings available in this window, and a great variety of drop-down menus and radio-button options, the menu you are presently concerned with is at the very top. It is clearly labeled "Default Browser" and is the only one you need to make the change.
-
Step 6
Click and hold on the "Default Browser" drop-down menu. All installed web browsers that meet the requirements for operating under Mac OS Panther will be listed and available for selection in this menu.
-
Step 7
Drag your mouse to select the web browser that you wish to set as your default and let go to make the selection.
-
Step 8
Close the "Preferences" window by clicking the red dot at upper left, invoking Cmd-W from the keyboard or selecting "Close Window" from the "File" menu.
-
Step 9
Quit "Safari." You may also wish to remove the "Safari" icon from the "Dock" by dragging it onto the "Desktop" where it will disappear in a animated puff of smoke.
-
Step 10
Go to the "Applications" folder and select the icon for your new default browser. Drag and drop it into the "Dock" at the location you want it so it will be available for quick, one-click startup in the future.
