How to Remove ITunes From Mac OS Panther

Apple can rightfully claim to have started the digital music revolution with its incredible iTunes application. it is now available for both Windows and Macs, and on both kinds of systems it can be upgraded to a newer version without "uninstalling" the older one. However, some Mac OS Panther users may wish to remove it manually if upgrading does not work for some reason, and/or if iTunes stops working correctly. Instead of trying to repair a defective iTunes application, it is faster and easier (and just as safe) to remove it and reinstall the current version or upgrade to a newer one.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Remove iTunes From Mac OS Panther

  1. Step 1

Go to "System Preferences" and select the "Accounts" icon. In the resulting window, click on the "Startup Items" tab and see if "iTunes Helper" is listed as an auto-startup item. If so, highlight it, click "Remove" and restart your Mac. Failure to check for this item will result in the inability to remove the application and may cause additional problems (at the very least, additional frustration on your part).

  2. Step 2

Locate the iTunes application. Unless you moved it, it will be in the "Applications" folder, but if you need to, invoke the "Find" command from the "File" menu (while at the "Finder") or press Cmd-F on the keyboard and locate it that way.

  3. Step 3

Drag the iTunes application to the "Trash," right-click (Control-click) and choose "Move to Trash" or highlight and press Cmd-Delete on the keyboard.

  4. Step 4

Go to the "Music" folder, select the "iTunes Music" folder inside it and delete it with your preferred method (see preceding step) if you wish to delete all of your music tracks and videos that iTunes has stored.

  5. Step 5

Consult the Apple support page (see Resources below) should you encounter unforeseen problems of any kind while working with iTunes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your actual music files (MP3 and AAC, for Advanced Audio Codec) are not part of the iTunes software itself, but are kept in your "Music" folder away from the application, which is in "Applications" unless you moved it for some reason.
  • You will not lose your music or your preferences if you remove and replace the iTunes software, but it is always wise to have a full, current backup of your data, in any case.
  • Do not attempt to install, remove or add iTunes to the "Dock" while it is running. In fact, it is a good idea to have no other applications except "Finder" running when you wish to add or remove software from your Mac OS Panther computer.
