Whether laser eye surgery is covered by your health insurance or not depends on many factors. There are many options to finance the laser eye surgery. While the process of finding funds may be overwhelming at first, the final result is well worth the effort.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

    Finance Your Surgery

  1. Step 1

Talk to your health care provider about insurance. While your company may say that they don't provide coverage for laser eye surgery, it may be possible to bill the surgery as an indispensable (rather than optional) procedure. Work with your surgeon to see if such a thing is possible.

  2. Step 2

Save up a percentage of your salary every month to finance your surgery. Setting aside even five percent of your salary can make a world of difference when it comes to finding financing. Even if you can't come up with the whole sum this way, it will still reduce the amount of money you need to find to cover the procedure.

  3. Step 3

Ask your surgeon about financing. Many providers have their own arrangements with banks or loan offices, and can help you set up a plan. Or ask about the possibility of paying for the procedure in installments.

  4. Step 4

Charge it to your credit card. This may not be the best option, but it can work if you have a card with very low interest rates and can afford to make more than the minimum monthly payment on it.

  5. Step 5

Use a financing company that specializes in elective surgery such as CareCredit. This company specializes in covering Lasik and other forms of eye surgery and offers payment options to fit every budget (see Resources below). You can work with CareCredit directly or ask your surgeon to act as an intermediate. Not all surgeons accept this type of financing, so you should talk to your doctor before you look for financing help.

  6. Step 6

Research Flex Plans, a type of alternative health insurance coverage that many companies offer their employees. These types of plans are offered in addition to your regular health insurance. You will, more than likely, have to pay for it, but the monthly expense is well worth it if it can cover the surgery.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you're calculating the total cost of your laser eye procedure, make sure to factor in extra money for possible complications. While most doctors will treat post-op problems for free, it doesn't hurt to have some money saved up in case you need it.
