How to Become a State Trooper in Arizona

You like the idea of a service job and think a career in law enforcement might be interesting. If you live in Arizona, a career as a State Trooper (referred to as a Cadet Officer) may just be the right fit for you. The detailed process to become one of Arizona's finest patrolling the state's highways is outlined in the steps below.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Valid Arizona driver's license
  • High school diploma or GED

Step1
Meet the four minimum qualifications. These include being 21 years of age by academy graduation, having a valid Arizona driver's license, holding a high school diploma or GED equivalent and being a legal United States citizen.
Step2
Take the next step and apply for the position of Arizona Cadet Officer. You may download an application from the Arizona Department of Public Safety website or you may contact DPS Human Resource office at 602-223-2290 to request an application.
Step3
Pass a multiple choice test of 100 questions and receive a score of at least 75%.
Step4
Participate in a physical fitness test that consists of six events. You must pass each event to move on to the next. Any failures will result in disqualification.
Step5
Display problem solving abilities and interpersonal skills while taking an oral examination.
Step6
Proceed to the next parts of the testing process which include a polygraph test, background check, psychological evaluation and drug testing. After passing all of these requirements, the successful candidate will be able to attend the training academy.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you apply online, you do not need to fill out the scannable part of the application and physically return it to the DPS.
  • You must not fold or staple the scannable portion of the application. If you do, so it will be rejected.
