Step 1
Demonstrate a need for a CCW permit. You may be a state employee who is required to be armed or a non-resident with a threat to themselves or a family member. A local law enforcement agency must verify that the threat is viable.
-
Step 2
Check with your local sheriff's office. The state of Iowa specifies the criteria that must be met to qualify for a permit at www.dps.state.ia.us, but each county decides on the exact procedure to use. Fill out the application at the same website.
-
Step 3
Complete an Iowa Firearms Safety Training Program offered by the state. You will need to fill out an enrollment form that can be found at www.dps.state.ia.us. You must score 70 percent on the written portion and 60 percent on the firing range.
-
Step 4
Provide your application, training certificate, fingerprints and photo identification, and pay applicable fees. Your permit will be good for one year. You must still be specifically authorized to carry a weapon to a public school.
-
Step 5
Produce the CCW permit upon demand by a law enforcement official.
