How to Get a Coast Guard Medal
Members of the United States Coast Guard are eligible for nine medals: Arctic Service Medal, Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal, Coast Guard Reserve Good Conduct Medal, Achievement Medal, Commendation Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, Medal for Heroism, Expert Pistol Shot and Expert Rifle Medal. The following steps will explain how to earn each of these Coast Guard medals.

Serve a total of 21 days in waters within the Artic Circle to earn the Artic Service Medal.

Complete three consecutive years of honorable service as an enlisted member in the Coast Guard to earn the Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal. Reserve members will be awarded the Coast Guard Reserve Good Conduct Medal. Service stars denote additional awards.

Perform an act of sustained heroism or meritorious service to earn the Commendation Medal. The local commander has a wide latitude in determining when this medal is awarded. The Achievement Medal is awarded for performing an outstanding achievement or meritorious service that does not qualify for a Commendation Medal.

Complete an exceptionally meritorious service in an area of great responsibility to be awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.

Carry out an act of heroism that does not involve conflict with an enemy to earn the Medal for Heroism.

Make the minimum qualifying score with a pistol at the expert level to earn the Expert Pistol Shot Medal. Expert rifle marksmen will earn the Coast Guard Expert Rifle Medal.
