How to Qualify for a Humanitarian Service Medal
The Humanitarian Service Medal was authorized by President Gerald Ford on Jan. 19, 1977, for United States military members who perform a designated humanitarian service. A few criteria are needed to qualify for the Humanitarian Service Medal.

Serve as a member of any United States armed forces on active duty. This includes cadets at a United States Military Academy, the National Guard and the Reserve if their use has been authorized in the qualifying activity. Qualifying operations are listed in DOD manual 1348.33 (M).

Perform in a specified humanitarian action or operation after April 1, 1975, in a distinguished and meritorious manner. Qualifying activities are designated by the Department of Defense and include evacuation of civilians from a combat area, humanitarian support to refugees and natural disaster relief. Regular law enforcement for activities such as domestic disturbances, equal rights demonstrations and protection of property do not qualify.

Participate directly in the designated activity within the specified geographical area. Individuals or units remaining in a geographically separated headquarters are specifically excluded from being awarded the Humanitarian Service Medal.

Receive the Humanitarian Service Medal for individual action or through participation as a military unit. You will not receive the medal if you have already received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal or the Armed Forces Service Medal for the same period of service.

Be awarded the Humanitarian Service Medal multiple times to receive service stars. Each bronze star represents an additional award and each silver star represents five additional awards.
