Qualify for a Humanitarian Service Medal

The Humanitarian Service Medal was authorized by President Gerald Ford on Jan. 19, 1977, for United States military members who perform a designated humanitarian service. A few criteria are needed to qualify for the Humanitarian Service Medal.

Instructions

    • 1

Serve as a member of any United States armed forces on active duty. This includes cadets at a United States Military Academy, the National Guard and the Reserve if their use has been authorized in the qualifying activity. Qualifying operations are listed in DOD manual 1348.33 (M).

    • 2

Perform in a specified humanitarian action or operation after April 1, 1975, in a distinguished and meritorious manner. Qualifying activities are designated by the Department of Defense and include evacuation of civilians from a combat area, humanitarian support to refugees and natural disaster relief. Regular law enforcement for activities such as domestic disturbances, equal rights demonstrations and protection of property do not qualify.

    • 3

Participate directly in the designated activity within the specified geographical area. Individuals or units remaining in a geographically separated headquarters are specifically excluded from being awarded the Humanitarian Service Medal.

    • 4

Receive the Humanitarian Service Medal for individual action or through participation as a military unit. You will not receive the medal if you have already received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal or the Armed Forces Service Medal for the same period of service.

    • 5

Be awarded the Humanitarian Service Medal multiple times to receive service stars. Each bronze star represents an additional award and each silver star represents five additional awards.
