The Bronze Star Medal is the fourth highest award in the United States armed forces and should always be called by its full name to distinguish it from bronze service stars.
Qualify for hostile fire pay during service in the United States military and you will be eligible for the Bronze Star Medal.
Step2
Serve as a member of the U.S. military after Dec. 6, 1941. Distinguish yourself with a brave, heroic or meritorious achievement while in action against a United States enemy. Make sure you are not engaged in flight at the time of the achievement. You may also serve with a friendly foreign force against an opposing force in action where the United States is a neutral party.
Step3
Perform acts of heroism that are of a lesser degree than that required for a Silver Star Medal. Nevertheless, the required service must still be meritorious and accomplished with distinction. You may also perform a single meritorious act or service.
Step4
Be a member of a foreign armed service while serving with United States armed forces. Civilian members of the Department of the Army are also eligible for the Bronze Star Medal for acts performed before Oct. 30, 2000.
Step5
Earn oak leaf clusters for the Army and Air Force, and award stars for the Navy, Marines and Coast Guard to denote multiple awards of the Bronze Star Medal. The "V device" denotes an act of combat heroism.
