Turtles are popular pets, but caring for a sick one can be difficult. If your turtle must be given shots, you can do it yourself by following these steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Prepare the needle and medication. You don't want to have the turtle ready and then have to fumble around for the medicine.

  2. Step 2

Place your turtle low over a soft surface like a bed or carpet. You may drop him if he tries to bite you, and you don't want to hurt him by dropping him on the floor from a high distance.

  3. Step 3

Grab the turtle with your hand holding the top and bottom shell. He may try to hide in his shell, but you can get him out by turning him upside down.

  4. Step 4

Insert the needle into the soft tissue between his neck and front leg. This is the best area to administer the shot.

  5. Step 5

Pull gently on the turtle's opposite front leg if he tries to turn his head toward the shot. This will get him to look at the other leg, exposing the shot site.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have any doubts, ask your veterinarian to show you how to give the pet turtle a shot.
  • Don't administer the shot into the same side of the neck every time. Alternate sides so that one side doesn't become sore.
