Until recent times it was unthinkable to change your religion. Today religion is becoming increasingly a choice because people are more aware, more independent, more tolerant and better traveled. To convert successfully you need to be sure that you are doing it for the right reasons. You need to have a genuine interest in your new religion and understand fully what you will be getting into.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Identify all the reasons motivating you to change your present religion. Write them down on a piece of paper. You may realize that what you don't like is not the religion itself but the personality of an important figure or the collective personality of the group at your place of worship.
Step2
Read about the religion you want to change from. If you were born into it perhaps you don't know enough facts about it. You may be assuming that other religions are more spiritual because you perceive them as exotic.
Step3
Assess the psychological cost of the conversion. Take into account the impact it will have on your career, family life and social life.
Step4
Use you heart to find out what religion attracts you the most. The choice to convert to a new religion ultimately is an emotional one.
Step5
Educate yourself about the new religion. Read extensively to find out what its fundamental beliefs are. Then judge to what degree those are in alignment with your beliefs.
Step6
Visit your local place of worship for the religion to which you wish to change. Attend several services. This will allow you to diagnose the atmosphere and the people.
Step7
Set up an appointment with the leader of your prospective religion to discuss openly your thoughts about making a religious change. Ask for advice and the steps that will be required to convert.

Tips & Warnings

  • The conversion process varies from religion to religion ranging from a few days to a few years.
  • Make sure the religion you are about to get into is not a cult. Inform yourself about the warning signs that signal a cult. Some cults are known to use brainwashing techniques and have devastating effects on the lives of their followers.
  • Your friends and family may become offended.
  • Your present religion may discourage conversion by assurances of eternal damnation. You may be holding on to these beliefs unconsciously. Acting against them when you are not aware of their impact may divide your mind and cause you emotional conflict.
  • Avoid argumentative discussions with your friends and family as this will cause unnecessary friction.
