Become a Police Sketch Artist

Police sketch artists work in law enforcement agencies to help identify suspects, missing persons and witnesses. They create composite drawings, computer generated age progression photos and 3-D clay reconstruction to assist with the identification. Although there are no formal degree programs to become a police sketch artist, there are steps to take towards a career.

Instructions

    • 1

Take classes in art including drawing and sculpture. Some schools have composite drawing classes. Also take computer classes. Some law enforcement agencies use computer-generated drawings.

    • 2

Enroll in communication and psychology classes. Police sketch artists do not only have to be artists they have to extract the information from a witness or victim. This can be difficult. A victim may be in a fragile emotional state and it is the job of the police sketch artist to help the victim remember details without traumatizing him or her further.

    • 3

Practice as much facial drawing as possible. Sketch faces from photos. Ask family and friends to provide a description of a photo and draw it.

    • 4

Put together a professional portfolio. Select your best composite drawings and photos of any facial sculptures to be placed in the portfolio.

    • 5

Contact law enforcement agencies including sheriffs department, city police and FBI agencies to determine if they need a police sketch artist. Some agencies use freelance police artists and may want more then one on their list.

    • 6

Volunteer with your local law enforcement agency while you are waiting for employment. Most law enforcement agencies use community volunteers in various capacities. This will help you get a foot in the door and show your portfolio to the right people. It may give you an edge over an outsider.
