Step 1
Teach your dog the "sit" and "stay" commands before you begin training him to spin.
-
Step 2
Get your dog into the sit position and tell him to stay.
-
Step 3
Pick up a treat and get your dog's attention. Lower the treat until it's almost level with his nose. Do not let him grab it from you.
-
Step 4
Tell your dog to "spin" as you make a circular motion with the treat. You should be leading him around in a tight circle. Ideally, his back legs should not move very much; he should be pivoting around on them.
-
Step 5
Keep practicing until your dog understands the trick. Then, stop using the treat to lead him in the circle in such a deliberate manner. Instead, keep the treat up at waist level and make a smaller circle with it while you give the "spin" command.
-
Step 6
Make sure you reward your dog with the treat and an enthusiastic "Good spin!" when he performs the trick correctly. Don't give him the treat or any verbal praise if he gets it wrong.
-
Step 7
Be patient. It's difficult to train a dog to perform tricks. Take it slow and don't hesitate to stop and try again tomorrow if things aren't going well.
