Become a Bioinformatics Professional

Bioinformatics is a forward-looking field that applies the tools of computer science and information systems to biological data. Professionals in the bioinformatics field work for biotechnology, genomics and pharmaceutical companies. Jobs are also available with more traditional technology firms seeking specialists to deal with pharmaceutical clients. Follow these steps to find positions in this industry.

Instructions

    • 1

Get good grades in high school while taking as many courses as possible in math and science.

    • 2

Choose a college with strong programs in biology and computer science. Some colleges offer undergraduate majors in bioinformatics, including the University of Sciences in Philadelphia, the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Virginia Commonwealth University.

    • 3

Study for a masters degree in bioinformatics. This is more important for aspiring professionals who did not major in bioinformatics. Masters degree programs are available at Boston University, which also offers a Ph.D., Northeastern University and Georgia Tech.

    • 4

Get practical experience through an internship. Accept an internship while studying and you have the freedom to work for no pay. The RIT website features an extensive listing of internships.

    • 5

Search and apply for jobs in the bioinformatics field. The Bioinformatics Organization website allows employers to post jobs and hosts discussion forums.

    • 6

Pick the accomplishments you want to highlight during your interview. Bring a copy of your resume and any other relevant materials.
