Get the whole neighborhood together to celebrate the end of the summer. Lives are so busy these days you can go weeks, even months, without talking to your neighbors. Spend some time catching up, eating and having fun with the entire block. Plan a Labor Day block party that will keep the kids and adults happy until next summer.

From Quick Guide: Throw a Great Block Party
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Put up party signs. Post signs around the neighborhood; it's the easiest way to get the word out about the block party. Specify the time and place. Add entertainment plans; request that each family bring a dish to share and any fun games they want to play.

  2. Step 2

Check with local government officials about closing down the street for the party unless you host the party in your backyard. Or, reserve a park with picnic tables, benches and shelters.

  3. Step 3

Call your neighbors, and split up a basic food list. Include meats to barbecue, salads, vegetables, fruits, snacks and desserts. Cover the basics and let other party goers fill in the pot luck menu.

  4. Step 4

Request guests bring their own beverages to make it easier on you. Eliminate the need to figure out what to drink.

  5. Step 5

Plan some fun activities for families. Have patriotic face painting. Order a bunch of red, white and blue helium balloons for the kids. Arrange family games like the three-legged race or water balloon toss. Keep the games simple.

  6. Step 6

Delegate duties and ask your neighbor to barbecue, a friend can be in charge of games and prizes and another neighbor can handle decorations.

  7. Step 7

Keep decorations simple. Include flags with the red, white and blue Labor Day theme. Organize a group of people to help decorate, set-up and clean up after the block party.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the entertainment simple. A block party is a time for everyone to socialize and get to know each other.
  • Plan activities to keep children busy.
  • Good game prizes include squirt bottles, squirt guns, small sun screens, sun glasses or anything to keep your guests cool.
  • Labor Day can be very warm. Make sure you have shaded areas for people to sit. Supply a cooler or two of ice cold water and keep food chilled so it doesn't spoil.
  • Keep bug repellent on hand for guests. Labor Day is known for its warmth, and its infestations of mosquitoes and other biting insects.
