Invite your friends and family to a backyard extravaganza with a unique twist. They'll be happily surprised to see a dance floor in your backyard for all ages to enjoy. Keep the menu and drinks simple and decorate for Labor Day with red, white and blue lights.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Invite your guests with a unique invitation. Buy shoelaces to tie on homemade invitations. Print invitations on heavy card stock paper. Cut it to resemble a man's dress shoe and tie the laces on each invitation. Include the phrase "Put on your dancing shoes" on your Labor Day dance invitations.
Step2
Find a rental company. Rent a large tent and dance floor. Make sure the tent has removable sides.
Step3
Hire a disc jockey to play music. Keep in mind your guests' tastes, and give the disc jockey a list of song ideas.
Step4
Plan to serve appetizers and snacks on a buffet style table near the drinks at the back of your tent. Serve finger foods and easy drinks such as pop and beer.
Step5
Decorate the tent with red, white and blue mini lights. Hang Chinese lanterns from the center of the tent. Try to keep with a patriotic theme and include red, white and blue plates and napkins for appetizers.
Step6
Plan activities to keep the kids busy. Have a table set up with patriotic color books for the tiny tots, play freeze dancing in one corner of the tent and set up some card games that the kids can play.
Step7
Give out party favors to kids and adults. Buy patriotic hats or little flags for everyone. Since the dance will be at night, buy the kids some glow in the dark bracelets or necklaces in red, white and blue.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to have a fancy, adult-only dance, include that on the invitation and plan your food and drinks accordingly.
  • Glow in the dark accessories are a good idea at a night time party to keep track of the little ones.
  • You'll need the removable sides if you have bad weather, in which case you may want to put them on to keep your guests dry.
