How to Teach a Child Numbers

Find creative ways to teach your child numbers. Teach numbers by playing counting games. Use food, find special objects to count, or make a book to use as your children learn to recognize each number. Practice writing numbers once they recognize them.

Things You'll Need:

• Foods
• Construction paper
• Markers
• Pencil
• Playing cards
• Tracing paper

1. Count food items. Pick foods your kids will be interested in counting and eating like candy, cereal, apples, oranges or grapes. Let them eat the food as a snack and reward, after counting it.

2. Make a number book out of construction paper. Gather 10 pieces of construction paper together into a book. Each page should have a new number on it. Have your child practice tracing the numbers with his finger and writing the numbers on each page.

3. Draw your own connect the dots with the numbers 1 through 10. Write the numbers very big so your child can see what each number looks like while he connects the dots. Be sure to help him get the numbers in order.

4. Play games with numbers. Use playing cards or card games designed for kids. Always say each number aloud so your child can hear the name of the number, and have him repeat it back to you.

5. Write numbers on pages that your child can trace. Once they get the hang of tracing the numbers, have them write the numbers without tracing your examples.

Tips & Warnings

• Teach the numbers in order.
• Teach writing the individual numbers with lined paper.
• Don't teach too many numbers at one time. Focus on a few at a time.
