Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- High school diploma
- Good communication skills
- Sense of creativity
- Generous supply of energy
Step1
Figure out what type of visual merchandising interests you the most (such as fashion-based or home interior shops).
Step2
Take a position at a retail store within your area of visual merchandising interest. Don't worry about not getting hired as a window dresser right off the bat.
Step3
Take an active interest in the merchandising routine of the business. Ask managers and/or district managers about upcoming floor plan changes. Learn about the company's standards for effective merchandising.
Step4
Volunteer. Offer to assist the staff with upcoming planograms and display campaigns. Make yourself available during those really busy periods of the retail year (such as back to school and Christmas). Just be sure to voice your interest before those busy periods go into full swing.
Step5
Share your ideas. Tell the managers about ideas you might have for improving a display. If your ideas translate to potential boosts in sales, they're going to listen!
