How to Become a Professional Guitarist

Everyone has a dream. In the music field, many have the same dream of becoming rich and famous playing in a band. Aside from actually playing the guitar well, there are steps that will get you on your way to becoming a professional guitarist.

Instructions

    • 1

Practice all the time. Not only will this help you stay in tune with your instrument, it will keep you ready for any audition that comes your way. To become a professional guitarist, you will need to work at your own sound to set you apart from all of the others.

    • 2

Create your own luck. Attend showcases and amateur events as much as possible. Luck can be made--it isn't some mystical design that you should just wait around for.

    • 3

Know the right people. It isn't necessarily who you know, but how well they know you. In order to get signed with a company, they will need to be sure that you are worth the risk of money. By working closely with different artists and meeting different people in the business, you will be better set to become a professional guitarist.

    • 4

Form a band. Music companies will want to work with people that have it all. If you can form a band with the right musicians, which allows you to build a good body of work as a whole, you are more likely to get noticed. Playing well together is not the only important factor. You will need to look for musicians that have like minds, can create and write quality songs, and have a captivating stage presence with you.

Make MySpace.com work for you. Many artists have found some success on the web. By creating a MySpace page, showcasing yourself, and building a fan base, you can show music companies that you are worth the risk.

    • 6

Take matters into your own hands. There are many ways to create your own label and make your own music for the public. Using resources on the web, and any local help that may be available to you, this may be the best way to get your music heard before the big companies discover you. On your way to becoming a professional artist, releasing your music on your own first can be incredibly lucrative in the long run.

I play the guitar and I don't need help to learn anything about it. I understand Utah is a bad market for anything. I'm under too much pressure from everybody to pay bills to just forget it. How can I play tunes for a paying audience without being disappointed?
