A first mate on a boat assists the captain in operating the vessel. The responsibility of a first mate is to direct and oversee the work of a deck crew and to command the boat when the captain is unable. There are 3 levels of coursework that must be passed before becoming a first mate on a boat.

Instructions

    • 1

      Get a Mate's license for motor vessels weighing no more than 500 tons from the U. S. Coast Guard.

      Acquire a Marine Radio Operator Permit and GMDSS certificate (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) from the Federal Communications Commission.

      Work for 1 year through military service or private vessel. You can work 8-hour days for 360 days or 12-hour days for 240 days.

      Obtain a current STWC certificate (Strike Warfare Commander) including Basic Safety Training and Lifeboatman certificates.

      Meet the requirements of the U. S. Coast Guard for drug testing.

      Carry a current passport.

    • 7

      Read and write English fluently.

    • 8

      Take all 3 levels of the first mate course and pass and receive your certificate.

  • Understand how to command the vessel without the captain.

  • Manage your crew like you would like to be managed.

  • Know how to swim at the level of a lifeguard before becoming a first mate.
