Step 1
Determine at what level of skill your routine can be performed. It is important to make sure you do not exceed your skill level as hip hop dancing can become quite difficult.
-
Step 2
Watch hip hop videos for the latest styles in dance moves. Often videos give choreographers and other musicians an idea of what dance move is the latest craze for the hip hop community.
-
Step 3
Write down ideas from videos you enjoyed so you can go back and review the videos when it comes closer to choreographing your routine. You want to ensure you are watching the latest videos so you have the most up-to-date moves.
-
Step 4
Choose music for your hip hop routine. Hip hop music is ever changing, so listen to a wide variety of artists before settling on a song. If necessary, use multiple songs in a mix CD to keep your routine fresh.
-
Step 5
Begin choreographing your routine, starting with simple 8 step sequences that you can remember. If you are teaching it to others, keep in mind the level of difficulty of your dance routine and the skills of your dancers.
-
Step 6
Continue making 8 count sequences until you have enough to complete your song(s). Many routines cut verses or bridges of songs to reduce time and prevent redundancy.
-
Step 7
Practice your routine repeatedly in a mirrored room so you can see yourself and your dancers (if you have them) from multiple angles. It's important to be aware of your routine from all perspectives so you can clean up moves as needed.
