How to Buy a Hedgehog

Just because hedgehogs are little critters, it does not mean that owning them is a little task. Before you buy a hedgehog, learn about their care and temperament. There are many questions you might want to ponder before bringing home a "hedgie."

    Instructions

      • 1

Locate a hedgehog breeder or visit a pet store to find your pet. Breeders can be found in your local newspaper, through HedgehogCentral.com or through a pet store.

      • 2

Examine the hedgehog before buying it. Check the hedgehog's eyes. They should be bright and alert. Crusty or sunken eyes are a symptom of a health problem.

      • 3

Check the hedgehog's quills, fur and skin. Look for anything unusual such as dry skin, mites, excessively dirty fur or signs of injuries. Again, these are all signs of health issues that need to be addressed by the breeder or store.

      • 4

Make sure the hedgehog is not over- or underweight. Check to see if it can roll into a ball or if it has a hollow looking tummy. Weight issues can be signs of poor living conditions or underlying health issues.

      • 5

Ask the age of the hedgehog. Breeders should know the exact age but pet stores might not. Hedgehogs only live 3 to 6 years, so finding out the age is important.

      • 6

Look at the hedgehog's parents if possible. Of course, breeders can do this easily but pet stores cannot. Seeing the parents can tell you about your pet's temperament, size and coloring when it becomes an adult.

      • 7

Make sure the pet store or breeder offers a health warranty. If something should happen to your pet within the first 6 months, you should be eligible for some sort or compensation.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Hedgehog breeders are required to be USDA licensed. Make sure your breeder has a copy of the license to show you.
