A newspaper advertisement can bring new clients into your business or promote a new service or product, but it can be a costly expense. Many companies have learned how to advertise in a newspaper for free. With a little time and energy, you can learn how to do this yourself.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find out the full price for advertising. Start by finding out how much it costs to place an insert in your local newspaper. Next, determine how much printing and paper will cost to have the required number of inserts. Add these amounts to the newspaper's cost. Divide this total by 3.

  2. Step 2

Form a co-op to spread the costs. Find 3 other businesses who are interested in advertising using an insert. Try businesses that are located near you. You can also contact businesses that offer a service or product that works well in conjunction with what you are offering.

  3. Step 3

Quote the price. Tell the other 3 businesses how much it will cost for them to have a quarter of a page advertisement on the insert. This is the price that you determined in step one.

  4. Step 4

Secure the funding. Each business should pay you 50 percent of their cost before you continue with the insert. Let the businesses know that the remaining balance is to be paid on the day they approve the advertisement. This guarantees that you will not end up with the final bill.

  5. Step 5

Design the insert. You will need to have the advertising content and artwork from each business in order to design the layout. Offer to help the other businesses with this. Plan enough time to have the businesses approve of the design before you print all the inserts.

  6. Step 6

Finalize the advertisement. Once the businesses have approved the insert and paid their remaining balances, it is time to print the inserts.

  7. Step 7

Submit the insert. You need to have the exact number of inserts required at the newspaper by the newspaper's deadline. If you have followed the steps correctly you will have a free quarter page advertisement in the newspaper.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sell specific spots on the insert to each company ahead of time so that you do not get caught in an argument over placement.

on 7/24/2007 This is dodgy, and is basically a scam. You are pretending that you are also contributing, but you are actually passing on the cost to the other 3 businesses - effectively stealing from them. If I was one of the other businesses involved and I found out, I would never deal with you again
